The Complete Guide to Navy SEAL Fitness Phase TWO

Navy SEAL Weight Training Workout

Add Weights to Your Navy SEAL Prep!

After more than a decade of successful fitness stories with the first Complete Guide to Navy SEAL Fitness which featured a hardcore calithenics, running, and swimming program designed to not only help you ace the Navy BUD/S Physical Screening Test, but also help prepare you for the high reps, miles of running, and swiming at BUD/S.  After writing such a book, many have stated that I do not like weight training.  As a multi sport athlete, I cut my teeth on fitness in a weight room and still love weight training.  Truth is - not every one NEEDS it.  The true answer to - do you need to weight train prior to any Spec Ops Selection program is?  IT DEPENDS.

It depends on your athletic background. Current PST scores. If you are a powerlifting football player who thinks long distance running is anything over 100 yards, I would recommend dropping the weights and start working on your mileage (run/swim) and high rep calisthenics vs 1 rep max of squats, deadlifts, and bench press.  BUT, if you are an endurance athlete without a strong foundation in strength and power training, I highly recommend you to start training in weights for a 8-12 week cycle.  See related articles:  Power to Endurance  or Endurance to Power

It is never a bad idea to get a cycle of lifting into your annual fitness preparation program no matter what your goal is.  The new book is an 18 week program that progresses with cardio, calisthenics, and weight training.  The Navy SEAL Weight Training Workout is arranged in a way to build strength, develop core stability, increase speed and endurance, but at the same time helps the body to recovery from high mileage impact activity (running / rucking) and high repetition calisthenics.

This workout has been tested over the past five years with the Heroes of Tomorrow groups preparing for Army SF, Navy SEALs, Air Force PJ, Navy SWCC, USMC RECON, as well as local  SWAT Teams.  Each member was able to achieve increases in strength and power and when they started a new cycle of higher mileage / calisthenics repetitions, they were faster than previous months in running and swimming tests.

If you have the first book - The Complete Guide to Navy SEAL Fitness, this next phase is a great addition to your fitness program.  These two exercise routines combine to make a challenging and progressive periodization program to help you complete the fitness cycle with the goal of hitting the highest marks on fitness tests and able to handle log PT, boat carries, injured man drills, and the high mileage of running, rucking, swimming.  So if you have a year to train before your Spec Ops school, try a cycle of weights, PT, cardio mixed in a challenging but smart progression to leads to results not over use injury and over-training syndrome.

TRX Train Like the Pros

TRX Workouts - This is a great device to use if you are failing at pushups and pullups.  The TRX rows will help you build your chest, shoulders, triceps and bicep / back muscles like a set of weights, but also work the core at the same time.
