You may be wondering about the back story of this book project?

Let me tell you a quick story about the time I had stress fracture, a lower back injury, a shoulder injury and ankle surgery all at the SAME TIME.  And, at the same time, I was trying to maintain a high level of tactical fitness as a Navy SEAL.  My main problem was I was struggling with over training and over-use injuries 12 months out of the year.  And I was getting more and more frustrated with being in pain all the time while under-performing because of these nagging injuries.

Then something even worse happened: My ankle dislocated for the first of many times before I had to get surgery.  The pain would be so intense that I knew I had to get it fixed.  The final straw was in a hotel on my own at a conference and I woke up (from passing out) on the floor, looking up at the ceiling. I knew something was wrong and would need surgery.

This injury / surgery meant I couldn't keep training, swimming, or running to continue my service as a Navy SEAL for a while.

As you can imagine, I was in bad shape and desperate, but I wasn't ready to give up on my dream of performing at the level of an elite tactical athlete.

Then I discovered periodization training.  At that point, everything changed!  I rebuilt myself and was slowly getting back to old levels of high performance in everything (running, swimming, lifting, PT tests, flexibility...) 

I finally figured out how to:

- Train year round without overuse injuries

- Increase my flexibility and mobility

- Actively pursue recovery

Because I decided to try periodization training, I was able to:

- Train every day without injury

- Maintain a higher level of fitness than I could before

- Not lose gains even when switching to different cycles of training.

And, I was able to help other people do the same thing with their fitness and flexibility.

This year, is my 20th year on this periodization training program and it has made all the difference in the world with maintaining high levels of fitness year round.
